This is taking longer than usual. It's usually a weak signal.

Who can message your kid?

Tap the apps your kid actually uses and you'll get who can reach them right now, the exact settings to open together, and one thing worth asking them.

It covers iMessage, Roblox, Discord, Fortnite, Minecraft, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp and the Nintendo Switch. Each fact says which company page it came from and the month it was checked.

Some of these will surprise you. Roblox changed to age based accounts in 2026 so older guides are wrong. A Minecraft child account starts completely closed until a parent opens it. And on Snapchat, setting Contact Me to friends only still lets anybody in a group chat reach your kid, and your kid did not add most of that group.

It's free, there's nothing to sign into, and it works best with your kid sitting next to you.

Why this works
When enough families in the same friend group make the same decision together, it stops being such a big deal to be the one kid without it. It works a lot like the Wait Until 8th movement.

What’s on your mind?
Ask Leaf, from The Digital Childhood
Tell me what’s happening and I’ll help you find the right words.
Leaf is the app's AI helper. It answers from my scripts and explainers, and it isn't a doctor or a therapist.
Not sure where to start?
“She wants her phone in her room at night.”
“I don’t know what to say about AI.”
“Gaming is taking over our evenings.”
Thinking it through with you…
A few words to try
Leaf says
A note from Chelsea: Leaf answers from my scripts and explainers and follows rules I set for it, but it's still an AI and can get things wrong, and it isn’t a replacement for a pediatrician, therapist, or any licensed professional. If something feels serious, please reach out to someone you trust who can actually help in person.

About
The Digital Childhood™
Calm guidance for raising kids in a digital world.
I'm Chelsea, and I built this for parents like me, the ones who needed a calm guide for the tech part of raising kids and couldn't find one anywhere.
I'm here to be a friend in your pocket.
I'm a stay-at-home mom of a son and a daughter in elementary school, and I was a kid who was deep in tech back when it wasn't on anyone's radar yet.
The Digital Childhood is what I wish my parents had when I was a kid, and what I wish I had now, so I created it.
There was plenty to read. What was missing was the translation: what does this mean for my kid, what should I do, and what do I actually say?
Before the app
After Cornell, I spent my career in HR, first at Capital One and then at the American Enterprise Institute, taking complicated things like benefits and company policies and making them easy for people to actually use.
It's the same work I do now, just with a different subject. I take the tech our kids are growing up with, figure out what parents actually need from it, and make it easier to handle.
When a hard moment happens, open The Digital Childhood.

None of this would exist without my nephew, Jack Pohlad, the technical developer and builder of The Digital Childhood application.
Where I stand on every app
My answer on Snapchat, Roblox, YouTube, AI for homework and the rest, on one page.
Our approach
We're not anti-technology here. We just want the tech part of raising kids to feel a lot less overwhelming for you.
Technology is part of growing up today, and we want kids to use it well, so the app explains the tech they’re actually using, gives you the words for the hard moments, and leaves plenty of room for childhood to still feel like childhood.
Where this is grounded›
The Digital Childhood draws on research and reporting from the American Academy of Pediatrics, Common Sense Media, the Surgeon General's advisory on social media and youth mental health, the Wait Until 8th movement, Pew Research, and the work of Jonathan Haidt, among others. We try to anchor advice in real research.
What this app is not›
The Digital Childhood is meant to be a calm starting point for your family, and it isn’t a replacement for a pediatrician, therapist, or any licensed professional. If something feels bigger than a conversation, that’s when to call them. Leaf, the Ask feature, is an AI helper that answers from my scripts and explainers. It isn’t a person, and it isn’t a doctor. And if you or your child is ever in crisis, 988 is the 24/7 lifeline by call or text in the US.

Monthly digest

Push notification
Sends a notification to everyone who's allowed reminders. Keep it short and warm.
What parents searched for and didn't find
Everything a parent typed into a search box in the last 30 days that the app had no answer for, the most asked first. It's the list of scripts and explainers to write next. Only the words are kept, nothing about who typed them.
Check Leaf's voice
Asks Leaf ten real parent questions, the same way a parent would, and shows you every answer. Anything that doesn't sound like you gets flagged underneath it. Takes about a minute.
Submissions
Every feedback note and story a signed-in parent has sent, newest first. This is also emailed to hello@thedigitalchildhood.com as it comes in.

Where I Stand
Every app they ask for
Where I stand, and the words I use.
Every family is different. This is what we do in our house, so you have a clear answer to start from.
The short version
  • No smartphone until they get their license, at 16.
  • No social media until then either.
  • No smartphone or internet of their own until high school.
  • Until then, a Tin Can or the landline for calls, and in middle school, texting on a flip phone.
That covers most of what they ask for. The rest, app by app, is below.
Tap one for the whole conversation, word for word.
Send this to a parent friend
It’s easier to stick to your answer when the other parents know what it is.

A pact only counts if everyone agrees.
Add your names and watch it take root.
Why this works
A pact your kids helped pick is a lot harder for them to argue with later. When they see their own name on it, the rules feel like something the whole family decided together. Print it, tape it to the fridge, and revisit it every six months as they grow.

Ohio required every school district to adopt an AI policy by July 2026, and Tennessee has required one since 2024. Idaho, Maryland, Oklahoma and Virginia have passed laws that put state AI guidance and district policies in place too. Asking your school where it stands is a fair question.
