Digital Childhood Script Series
"Everyone else has Snapchat."
What to say
Younger kids
"I hear you, and I know it feels like that, and 'everyone' almost never means everyone, it means the loudest people in your group."
Middle kids
"Let's talk about what Snapchat actually is, because I want to understand it before I say yes or no, and there is a lot built into it from disappearing messages to streaks to location sharing."
Older kids · Not ready to decide
"I'm not saying no forever. I'm saying not yet. Let's revisit this in three months."
What not to say
"Because I said so." or "You're too young." These make it a power fight. The goal is a conversation, not a verdict.
Why this matters
The "everyone" argument is designed to make you feel like the odd one out. The Younger kids version names that dynamic without dismissing their real feelings.
Follow-up questions
- "Which of your friends actually has it, can you name them?"
- "What would you use it for most?"
