The Phone Years
"She had a phone when she was my age."
What to say
Start here
"You're right, she did, and honestly some of how that went is exactly why I'm slower with you. That's about what I learned watching it, not about you being the younger one."
Own the change out loud
"When she got hers, TikTok wasn't what it is now and AI chat apps didn't exist. The phone is the same size and what's inside it is not, so I've changed my mind about the age, and I'd rather tell you that than pretend I was always this strict."
Give them their own timeline
"So here's yours, and it isn't hers. You get the basic phone at this point and we look at apps at that point, and I'll write it down so you can hold me to it."
What not to say
"Life isn't fair." True and useless, and it tells your kid the only reason they cannot have a phone is that you said so, which is the reason they will argue with hardest and remember longest.
Why this matters
This lands as unfairness because it genuinely is inconsistent, and the honest answer is that the apps changed. Saying you changed your mind, and why, is more persuasive than defending a rule you no longer believe, and giving this kid a written timeline of their own takes the comparison away.
Follow-up questions
- "What is it you most want a phone for?"
- "Which apps do you actually care about having?"
- "If we wrote down the dates, would that help?"
