A streak counts how many days in a row two people have used an app together and resets to zero if they miss one, which converts something a kid enjoyed into something they owe.
The loss is what does the work
A counter going up in the app is mildly pleasant. A counter about to reset to zero after two hundred days is genuinely distressing, and that gap is exactly what the app is counting on, so the pressure your kid feels is not them being dramatic about a number.
It is a promise to another child
Streaks are shared, so breaking one lets a friend down as well, which is why kids hand their password to a friend before a trip and panic about a day with no signal. The obligation is social, and that is much harder to walk away from than an app.
How they actually end
Very few kids decide to quit a streak. It usually ends by accident, and the useful thing a parent can do is make that accident survivable in advance, by saying out loud that a lost streak is not a lost friendship before the day it happens.
