Why a Streak Starts to Feel Like a Chore
A streak counts how many days in a row two people have used an app with each other, and it goes back to zero the day they miss, unless somebody pays Snapchat to bring it back. So something your kid used to enjoy starts to feel like something they owe somebody.
Why losing it feels so bad
Watching the number go up is kind of nice. Watching it about to go back to zero after two hundred days feels awful, and the app is counting on that feeling. So when your kid is stressed about it, they're not being dramatic over a number.
It's a promise to another kid
Streaks are shared, so breaking one feels like letting a friend down too. That's why kids hand their password to somebody before a trip and panic about a day with no signal. It's a friendship thing now, and that's a lot harder to walk away from than an app.
How they actually end
Almost no kid decides to end a streak. It ends by accident, so what you can do is make that accident okay before it happens. On a normal day, tell them that losing a streak doesn't mean losing the friend.
