Most teenagers on Instagram or TikTok run more than one account, usually a public one and a smaller private one, and the private one is where the honest posting happens.
Why kids make a second one
The main account becomes a performance for everyone they have ever met, which is exhausting, so the second account is where they post the unflattering and unedited version for a handful of friends. That instinct is healthy and worth understanding before you decide what to do about it.
Private does not mean contained
A close friends list of eight people is still eight devices that can screenshot. The account being private controls who can scroll it, not where anything from it ends up, and this is the single fact that changes how a kid posts once they actually believe it.
Why banning it backfires
A second account takes about a minute to make and needs only an email address. Telling a kid they cannot have one mostly means having one you do not know about, so being told it exists is worth more than winning the argument about whether it should.
