Our Story
My daughter asked to go to Sephora after one airplane ride
One short flight of skincare videos, and suddenly she wanted all of it. Here's what we did.
We were on a short flight and my daughter had her iPad. By the time we landed she was asking to go to Sephora. The whole flight she'd been watching video after video of young girls walking through their skincare routines.
What got me
It scared me how fast it happened. One short flight, and she went from never thinking about skincare to wanting all of it.
I didn't want to just say no, so we watched something together. There's a father and daughter on Instagram, John & Sage, and the daughter explains how those get ready with me and skincare videos are really just ads made to sell you things. My daughter watched it, and something clicked.
What she figured out
She figured out on her own that it was never really about skincare. It was about getting her to want to buy things. I didn't have to convince her, she saw it herself.
That's the part I keep coming back to. The pull was real and it was fast, and so was how quickly she saw through it once someone showed her how it works. I can't shield my kids from everything online, but I can help them understand what they're looking at.
