Yope

Explained for parents by The Digital Childhood.

What it means

A photo app for small friend groups. Whatever a friend sends pops up right on their lock screen, so they see it without even opening the app. Friends get added from their contacts, by username or with an invite link, and an invite link can get passed around past the friends it was meant for. A lot of kids moved to it when Australia banned social media for under 16s, and it's rated 4+ in the App Store, so it can look harmless to a parent even though it works a lot like social media.

How to bring it up with your kid

"Who's in your Yope groups? Is it people you actually know?" Keep it to real friends, and don't share your invite link anywhere public, because whoever has it can get in.
