What it means
Pretending to be someone you are not online, usually to start a fake relationship. Catfishing happens through fake Instagram, Snapchat, or gaming accounts and can target younger teens emotionally. The fact that this word is mainstream means kids have heard of it, but they often think it only happens to other people.
How to bring it up with your kid
"Have you ever talked to someone online who turned out to be different than they said? It happens more than people realize. The rule that always works: if you have not met them in person at least three times, treat the profile as not really them yet." Direct, no shame, clear rule.
