What's on Their School Chromebook
The laptop or tablet the school hands your kid has filters, and in some districts they only work on the school's network. So the same device can act completely different once it's sitting on your kitchen table, and it's worth asking which kind yours is.
Why the school filter might not work at home
Some districts filter through the school's network, so the blocking only happens because the device is on school wifi. Others put the filter on the device itself and it keeps working at home. If yours is the first kind, the second it joins your wifi at home, a lot of that protection just stops working. Nobody tells parents that, so we all assume the school took care of it.
What the school account can still see
School devices are usually managed, so the district can see browsing history and what's installed, and they can often put software on it too. So your kid has less privacy than they think, and the district can see a lot more of it than you can.
Where the loophole usually is
The gap is usually in the stuff nobody thought to filter, like kids chatting in the comments of a shared doc, the school email that can reach anybody, and whatever game site is allowed because a teacher used it once.
