There are AI apps that take a normal, clothed photo of someone and make a fake nude of them in seconds. Kids are using them on classmates, the fake images look real, and it has already happened in a lot of schools.
Why this matters for your kid
A regular photo from a class group chat or an Instagram post is all one of these apps needs. It works on any kid, including the ones who did nothing but show up in a photo, so this is worth understanding whether or not your own child would ever go near it.
What your child experiences
For the kid who gets targeted, it feels like a nightmare they can’t wake up from, because the image is fake but the humiliation is completely real and it spreads fast. For the kid who makes one, it usually starts as a "joke" or a dare in a group chat, without them grasping that they just made something that can seriously hurt another kid and pull in the police.
Say it before it comes up
There are no signs to watch for on this one, so get ahead of it. Say it out loud before it ever happens: these apps exist, making or sharing one of these images of another kid is a real crime and not a prank, and if it ever happens to them it isn’t their fault and they should come straight to you.
